Why do I need this medicine?
Amphotericin B is used to treat serious fungal or life-threatening infections.

This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
How do I use this medicine?
Amphotericin B injection is to be given intravenously (into the vein). It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.

Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you

A test dose of this medicine is given to you before your first treatment to check if you have an allergy to Amphotericin B.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition.

Amphotericin B must be administered at regular intervals for it to be effective. Do not skip any dose. You must complete the entire course of the medicine.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Amphotericin B.

If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use Amphotericin B if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Routine tests (e.g. complete blood count, liver and kidney function, electrolyte levels) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
What side effects could I experience?
Amphotericin B may cause any of the following side effects: chills, nausea, vomiting, headache, and low blood pressure.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin
  • medicine for cancer
  • anti-inflammatory medicine e.g. corticosteroids
  • water pill or medicine for water retention
  • other medicine to treat fungal infection e.g. flucytosine
  • medicines for heart disease e.g. digoxin
  • medicines used as muscle relaxant e.g. tubocurarine
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Amphotericin B.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Available products of Amphotericin B may vary with its storage requirements. Ask your doctor or pharmacist on how to properly store this medicine.

Keep this medicine away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
